Doyle Brunson, a prominent figure in the world of poker commonly recognized as a pioneer, passed away on Sunday in Las Vegas at the age of 89.
Brunson, whose impact on the game of poker extended across different eras, achieved the distinction of being the initial player to reach the official milestone of earning $1 million from the game. He translated the knowledge gained from his extensive career into the creation of SuperSystem, a revolutionary poker strategy guide published in 1979. This seminal work included valuable insights from numerous esteemed players, further solidifying his enduring legacy.
“It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson,” read a statement from the Brunson family, tweeted out by agent Brian Balsbaugh. “He was a beloved Christian man, husband, father, and grandfather. We’ll have more to say over the coming days as we honor his legacy. Please keep Doyle and our family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.”
Originally from Longworth, Texas, Brunson engaged in the sport of basketball during his college years at Hardin-Simmons until a knee injury prematurely concluded his athletic journey.
Subsequently, Brunson pursued a professional career in poker and relocated to Las Vegas, where he established himself as a prominent figure in the increasingly popular World Series of Poker. He achieved victory in the WSOP’s Main Event on two occasions (1976-77), attained second place in 1980, and secured third place in 1972 and 1983.
Brunson’s impressive record of 10 bracelets in the WSOP is presently equaled by only one other individual, standing as the second-highest tally in the event’s history. Additionally, he emerged victorious in a World Poker Tour event in 2004, earning a substantial prize of $1.1 million.
